Once upon a time she was just another suburban kid searching for her niche. After winning praise for a floor-length skirt she made in a seventh grade home economics class, Lyons set her sights on a career in design. She assembled a portfolio and enrolled in Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, near her hometown. Meeting other aspiring fashion designers gave her a sense of belonging. 鈥淚t was the first time I ever felt there were people like me out there,鈥 she says.
When she got serious about becoming a designer, Lyons knew she had to move to New York. 鈥淚f I was going to make fashion a career, I needed to be damn sure that I could really do it,鈥 she says. She transferred to Parsons鈥 BFA Fashion Design program soon after, beginning her journey through the wilds of the New York fashion scene.
Lyons fondly describes life at Parsons as 鈥渘onstop work.鈥 The creative camaraderie among the students engendered lasting friendships: J.Crew designers Tom Mora (menswear) and Jenny Cooper (childrenswear) were classmates, as was designer Derek Lam.
After graduation, Lyons searched for another place to call home. 鈥淚 was a poor 20-something-year-old kid who couldn鈥檛 afford to buy a single piece from most of the places I wanted to work,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hen my J.Crew interviewer showed up in jeans, I knew I could be myself at the company.鈥 Lyons eventually became President and Design Director, responsible for creating a unified brand from the work of dozens of talented designers.
After twenty-seven years at J.Crew, Lyons left to explore new terrain, including as co-founder and CEO of LoveSeen, a beauty brand, and sharing her creative skills with others on television. In 2020, she debuted her HBO design-centric reality TV series聽Stylish with Jenna Lyons, which featured her working with everyday people on projects ranging from interior renovations to entertaining challenges to fashion brand launches.聽
The show鈥檚 focus draws on Lyons鈥 longtime love of chic interiors, publicized first when shelter magazine聽Domino聽featured her Brooklyn townhouse on it cover. Later, her Soho loft, with its bespoke details and signature blend of comfort and elegance, spawned imitators in the way Lyons鈥 own sartorial style has. Lyons still takes on selected interior design projects and recently joined the cast of the聽Real Housewives of New York City聽as the series鈥 first lesbian.
Although two decades have passed since Lyons graduated, her ties to Parsons are still strong. She relishes opportunities to return to campus for public events and gives generously to Parsons. When students ask for her secret to success, Lyons has a simple answer: 鈥淒o the thing you would do in your spare time. There鈥檚 nothing better than passion.鈥
