  • Continuing and Professional Education at The New School combines a contemporary approach to learning with practitioners at the top of their fields. We offer a wide range of subjects for learners of all ages, so you can thrive here whether you are pivoting professionally, jump-starting your college experience, or pursuing a lifelong passion. In addition to offerings at Parsons, you’ll find courses from the university’s other colleges.

    Courses are offered throughout the year in subjects ranging from graphic, digital, and interior design to fashion business, marketing, and the social sciences. We also offer summer intensives in art and design. Courses can be taken for general credit (non-degree) or on a noncredit basis.

    • Creative Writing and Journalism

      The New School held its first academic creative workshop in 1931. Today, non-degree students enjoy opportunities to develop and hone skills in the genres of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and journalism.

    • Fashion

      Parsons design courses cover the process, skills, and language of fashion design, progressing from basic drawing and conceptualization to garment construction. Business courses prepare students to work in a variety of fields in the fashion industry, including marketing, retailing, and merchandising.

    • Fine Arts

      Fine arts courses prepare students for the full range  of art and design disciplines. Beginning artists, designers, photographers, and illustrators master the essential techniques and ideas of the profession, while experienced students develop their skills and creativity in advanced-level courses.

    • Graphic and Digital Design

      Covering subjects ranging from traditional graphic design to the latest technologies in information, Web, and user experience design, Parsons courses enable today's designers to keep up with the rapidly changing market. These courses provide solid technical training while emphasizing design and creativity, allowing both the novice and the advanced student to excel.

    • Humanities and Social Sciences

      Choosing from an expansive portfolio of courses from The New School’s degree-granting colleges, students stay on top of central issues in today’s society with courses on race and gender, activism, international affairs, art and culture, and more. 

    • Interior Design

      Interior design courses provide students with the tools to design a new environment while developing their spatial sensibilities. Courses explore topics ranging from planning, materiality, and lighting to the world of antiques and furniture, to specialized industry-standard software.

    • Leadership, Management, and Marketing

      Incorporating Parsons’ design-centered approach to entrepreneurship, marketing, and business management, our leadership courses provide theoretical and practical skill sets that can be applied in all industry sectors. Students acquire skills in areas ranging from branding to digital media, and design thinking to data visualization —  skills that enable them to move their businesses or careers forward.

    • Media and Film Studies

      We offer courses in subjects ranging from screenwriting and documentary filmmaking to digital storytelling, covering current media scholarship as well as the latest tools used in media production and management. Students apply what they learn in media theory, media business, and media technology in producing their own creative projects.
