    Profile

Margarita Gutman holds a doctorate and is an architect from the 好色先生 of Buenos Aires. She is Professor of Urban Studies and International Affairs, and Director of the Observatory on Latin America (OLA) at The New School. She is also Profesora Consulta pro bono and member of the Doctoral Commission of the School of Architecture, Design, and Urban Planning at the 好色先生 of Buenos Aires (FADU-UBA). From 2004 to 2009, she has been Full Professor and holder of a Chair (C谩tedra) of History of Architecture and Cities at FADU-UBA. She was a Scholar at The Getty Research Institute and at the Woodrow Wilson International Center, Fellow at the International Center for Advanced Studies of New York 好色先生, and Senior Fellow at the Vera List Center for Art and Politics, The New School.

She is author, co-author or editor of 19 books. Among the most recent authored books are: Martin Noel, Serie Maestros de la Arquitectura Argentina (2015); and Buenos Aires: El Poder de la Anticipaci贸n. Im谩genes itinerantes del futuro metropolitano en torno al Centenario (Buenos Aires: The Power of Anticipation. Itinerant Images of Metropolitan Futures on the Centennial) (2011). 聽

She co-authored Bicentenario Argentino: Celebrar en las calles. Ser parte de la historia (Agentine Bicentennial: Celebration in the Streets. Being part of History) (2016); and with the late Jorge Enrique Hardoy Buenos Aires Historia Urbana del 脕rea Metropolitana 1536 -2006 (Urban History of the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area, 1536-2006) (2007).

Gutman edited: Argentina: persistencia y diversificaci贸n, contrastes e imaginarios en las centralidades urbanas (Argentina: persistence and diversification, contrasts and imaginary in urban centralities) (2010); Construir Bicentenarios: Argentina (Building Bicentennials: Argentina) (2005); and the award-winning Buenos Aires 1910: Memoria del Porvenir (Buenos Aires 1910: Memories of the World to Come) (1999). 聽

Among her co-edited books, could be mentioned: Habitat en deuda: Veinte a帽os de politicas urbanas en Am茅rica Latina (Habitat in Debt: Twenty Years of urban policies in Latin America) (2016); Bicentenarios en Acci贸n. Conmemoraci贸n y Movilizaci贸n Pol铆tica en Am茅rica Latina (Bicentennials in Action. Commemoration and Political Mobilization in Latin America) (2016); Construir Bicentenarios Latinoamericanos en la era de la globalizaci贸n (Building Latin American Bicentennials in the age of Globalization) (2012); Latin America on the Move. The Post Neo-liberal Transition (2007); Buenos Aires 2050: im谩genes del futuro / decisiones del presente (Buenos Aires 2050: Images of the Future / Decisions of the Present) (2007); and Buenos Aires 1910: El Imaginario para una Gran Capital (Buenos Aires 1910: Imaging a Great Capital) (1999).

Her current research work is the second phase of her research published in 2011 as the book Buenos Aires: El Poder de la Anticipaci贸n. She studies the anticipations of the urban future in Buenos Aires Metropolitan Region (BAMR) 1990-2015, and analyses and compares two fields, the disciplinary and extra-disciplinary, i.e. plans produced within the professional discipline of urban planning and policy, and those ideas and proposals produced by local journalists, community organizations and general public, published in Blogs, Websites and YouTube. There are still no other studies in Argentina that analyze all the plans which have been produced in the BAMR in the last two decades, and this is the only study which compares and contrasts disciplinary plans with "plebeian" anticipations as expressed in the digital sphere.
